On September 19, 1827, a fight broke out on the Mississippi River sandbar. What started out as a formal duel between two noteworthy Louisiana family members resulted in a skirmish in which Jim Bowie, originally simply a supporter about the sidelines, was shot and stabbed in advance of drawing out a large knife and killing a person named Norris Wrig
